A viral infection that kept Florida's starting running back, Matt Jones, out of action for the entire preseason will only cost him one game of playing time. But a labrum injury will sideline starting right tackle Chaz Green for the entire season.
There was far greater concern initially for Jones, whose infection resulted in weight loss and plenty of uncertainty for the sophomore. Jones became Florida's best option at running back at the end of last season, and ran for a season-high 81 yards against rival Florida State in the season finale. UF coach Will Muschamp indicated Jones would be out for the Toledo game this weekend:
The news is much worse for Green, who started 10 games at right tackle last season for UF, grading at better than 80 percent in the last four. Green will have surgery on a torn labrum. Tyler Moore, who worked at guard for much of the preseason, will step in for UF at Green's position. While Green has 20 career SEC appearances, Moore has none. He started four games as a freshman for Nebraska in 2011, and spent last year at a community college.
The loss of Green could be a big one for a Florida team looking to rebound offensively from 2012.
