NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported before the Raiders' Sunday victory over the Houston Texans that Matt McGloincould push Terrelle Pryor for Oakland's starting quarterback job with an impressive performance.
That's exactly how it went down in McGloin's first NFL start. The undrafted rookie exceeded expectations with a strong arm, command of the offense and a veteran's savvy in the pocket.
Coach Dennis Allen confirmed Monday that McGloin has "certainly earned the right to be in the discussion" as the Raiders' quarterback going forward.
The decision will hinge on several factors, Allen added, not least of which is the status of Pryor's nagging knee injury. Allen plans to sit down with Pryor before announcing the Raiders' Week 12 starter versus the Tennessee Titans.
The Raiderswere "intrigued" by McGloin even while Pryor was playing well early in the season, Rapoport reported on Monday's edition of NFL Network's "NFL Total Access." NFL Media columnist Michael Silver said on the show that he expects the Raiders to stick with the "hot hand" at QB. McGloin got the game ball for Sunday's win.
If the Raiders' brain trust is not convinced Pryor is the long-term answer, as Silver reported Sunday morning, it makes sense to give their "poor man's Jeff Garcia" an extended audition.
