Michael Bennett takes 'sore loser' jab at Cam Newton

Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett brought some unexpected heat to the 2016 MTR Western Sports Star of the Year Awards on Wednesday night.

As the winner, Bennett gave a speech and addressed the other finalists -- Seattle Sounders star Clint Dempsey, Seattle Mariners designated hitter Nelson Cruz, Washington State quarterback Luke Falk, Washington golfer Cheng-Tsung Pan and Seattle University soccer's Pete Fewing -- and took that opportunity to zing Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

"I hope you guys aren't sore losers like Cam Newton," Bennett said, via SeattlePI.com.

The remark allegedly drew a big laugh and Bennett went on to hurl some one-liners at his fellow Seattle-area stars.

And while his comments will probably draw some ire from the Newton defenders out there -- myself included -- it's hard to imagine there was much animosity behind these remarks. Although the Seahawks tend to view themselves as lone wolves in the NFL landscape, the Panthers are a team after their own hearts. Like the Seahawks, Carolina talked, taunted and danced its way through the playoffs. The Panthers were individualists to the end, including Newton's news conference pout session.

If there is any opponent the Seahawks would have to respect, it should be Newton and the Panthers.
