Michael Bidwill: Cardinals will build around Carson Palmer

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The three-year, $50 million contract extension reached between the Cardinals and quarterback Carson Palmer wasn't solely based on the team's commitment to him as their starter.

Cardinals president Michael Bidwill said before Sunday's game against the Rams that the team wanted to reach a deal with Palmer -- and get it done at this point -- so it also could "get ahead" with its planning in regards to the salary cap and "building a team around" Palmer.

Bidwill said GM Steve Keim and coach Bruce Arians have spoken for weeks about getting Palmer extended while coming up with projections as to how to structure its financial future as it pertains to player personnel.
