Mike Pouncey could miss 3 months after hip surgery

The lone holdover from the Dolphins' 2013 starting offensive line could be out for an extended period of time.

Mike Pounceyunderwent surgery to repair a torn labrum Monday, and the Miami center is expected to miss at least three months while he recovers, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source informed of the player's condition. ESPN first reported the news.

In a best-case scenario, Miami's anchor would return for Week 4 at the Raiders. However, it's more likely that Pouncey starts the season on the PUP list, and he would be eligible to return for Week 7 at Chicago. Percy Harvin had the same procedure last June and didn't return until Week 11.

Regarded as one of the best centers in the league, Pouncey has missed just two games since being drafted by the Dolphins in the first round of the 2011 draft. He was forced to miss those contests last season while dealing with a gallbladder issue. 

Pouncey and the Dolphins' line had a tumultuous 2013. Pouncey was required to undergo a mental health evalutation for his participation in the Jonathan Martin-Richie Incognito controversy. He also apologized for wearing a "Free Hernandez" hat in a picture with his brother Maurkice after catching a lot of heat.

Losing the Pro Bowl center for all of training camp could be debilitating for a Dolphins offensive line that will feature four new starters, two of them rookies. Pouncey is the leader of the line, and as the center, he makes all the calls. His presence is paramount for chemistry.
