Mississippi State's De'Runnya Wilson, the Bulldogs' leading receiver in 2014 and an intriguing talent who is expected to be one of the SEC's top wide receivers this fall as a junior, was arrested Friday night for marijuana possession.
WSFA-TV in Montgomery, Ala., reported that River Falls, Ala., Police Chief Greg Jackson said that Wilson and three other men, none of whom were football players, were pulled over for speeding and that marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found in their Jeep. Wilson and the others were charged with possession of marijuana second degree and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The Starkville (Miss.) Daily News reported that a Mississippi State spokesman said head coach Dan Mullen was aware of the incident.
Wilson led Mississippi State last season with 47 receptions for 680 yards and nine TDs. Wilson (6-foot-5, 225 pounds) is a former Alabama "Mr. Basketball" who played just two seasons of high school football (as a freshman, then again as a senior) in the Birmingham area. While he remains raw, Wilson is a big-time athlete with a huge upside. NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah wrote in November that "I'm intrigued by him every time I watch him." Jeremiah praised Wilson's ability to "use his size on slant and vertical routes," and wrote that Wilson is "a player I'll be keeping an eye on."
Wilson, who played extensively as a true freshman in 2013, has 73 receptions and 12 TDs in his two seasons at Mississippi State. He and senior quarterback Dak Prescott should form one of the SEC's top pass-catch duos this fall.
Mississippi State opens spring practice Wednesday.
