Muhammad Wilkerson will report to Jets camp on time

The New York Jets will have one of their best players in the building when they kick off training camp on Wednesday.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Muhammad Wilkerson will report to camp on time, according to a source who has spoken to him. Wilkerson's agent and the Jets are attempting to work out a long-term extension.

The news is not a surprise. Wilkerson sat out the voluntary portion of the Jets' offseason program, but was in attendance for mandatory minicamp in June.

Wilkerson is scheduled to make $6.97 million this season, the final year of his rookie deal. He lost some leverage in May, when the Jets used the sixth-overall pick in the NFL draft to select USC star Leonard Williams.

The Jets will be counting on Wilkerson to carry the line early in the season. Defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson has been suspended the first four games of the season for violating the league's policy of substance abuse.
