Multi-school study shows better helmets can prevent concussions

Virginia Tech announced findings of a study published Friday in the Journal of Neurosurgery that helmets can be manufactured to reduce the risk of concussions.

Dr. Stefan Duma, who runs the STAR rating system for helmets at Virginia Tech, reiterated that no helmet can be made to prevent concussions.

The study was published two weeks after the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment announced it had created standards for helmets to address concussions, NFL Evolution reported. Those standards will be voted on in June and could take effect by September 2015.
