We learned Friday that Rex Ryan believes he's a "hell of a lot better football coach" than he gets credit for.
We're going to find out this year. The New York Jets enter a new season with some serious roster flaws on both sides of the ball. Things particularly are grim on offense, where the Jets have little in the way of established playmakers outside of Santonio Holmes. Even Holmes is not a given at this stage.
But perhaps we shouldn't overlook the Jets' in-house options. Jeff Cumberland was thinking big when discussing the team's acquisition of fellow tight end Kellen Winslow.
Said Cumberland (via the New York Daily News): "With my size and his size, I would be more like (New England Patriots tight end Rob) Gronkowski, he would be more like (Aaron) Hernandez."
We're guessing that Cumberland is holding himself and Winslow up against Gronk and Hernandez in terms of physical size only. Gronkowski (6-foot-6, 245 pounds) has two inches and about 15 pounds on Cumberland. Winslow and Hernandez roughly are the same weight, though Winslow has a two-inch height advantage.
Of course, size doesn't promise production. In truth, the Jets would be thrilled if their tight ends provided half of Gronkowski and Hernandez's statistical output in 2013.
