The Carolina Panthers are displaying confidence in young offensive lineman Nate Chandler.
The 25-year-old signed a three-year contract extension, the team announced Wednesday. According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the deal is worth $7.95 million, with $1.87 million guaranteed. Chandler was entering the final year of his contract.
Chandler is battling Byron Bell for the starting left tackle job on Cam Newton's blindside, after Pro Bowl tackle Jordan Grossretired following the 2013 season. The extension could indicate Chandler has the edge heading into training camp.
A former undrafted rookie in 2012, Chandler began his career as a defensive tackle but moved to offensive line last season. He played in 16 games with eight starts -- six at right guard and two at right tackle.
The unproven left tackle could play a key role this season and his extension shows the franchise -- who did not draft or sign a free-agent left tackle -- is invested in his future transformation.
"He's come a long way," general manager Dave Gettleman said via the team's official website. "He's getting some on-the-job training and he's showing a lot of promise."
The team also announced two-year extensions for defensive end Mario Addison and safety Colin Jones.
