Nebraska's Randy Gregory sees 3-4 defense as his best NFL fit

NFL draft prospects can be reticent at times in discussing the defensive scheme they are best-suited for at the next level.

However, Nebraska's Randy Gregory embraces his fit: the 3-4 linebacker with the get-the-quarterback assignment. Think Jason Taylor and Justin Houston.

"I like standing up," Gregory told The Associated Press. "It serves my body better, my physical traits better, being able to see the play form and stay in an athletic stance and make plays. At the same time, if a 4-3 team comes around, I feel I can help them and play that spot."

Gregory is regarded among the elite prospects in the 2015 draft. All three of the NFL Media analysts who have waded into mock draft waters view Gregory, for now, as a top-10 pick.

At 6-foot-6, 240 pounds, he will be looking to show not only the explosiveness he used to record seven sacks and 16 quarterback hurries last season, but his strength as well. Whether his light frame will be a problem for him in the Sunday league is among the questions NFL scouts will seek to answer at the NFL Scouting Combine in two weeks. Gregory clearly has logged his time on the bench press.

"I will tell you everyone is not expecting for me to probably to do too well on (the bench press), but I think I'm going to surprise some folks," he said. "I know I am, actually."

Combine predictions on 40-yard dashes can be fun, but guarantees about the event's true strength test, the bench press, don't come around much. Gregory didn't make any predictions, but did say his goal is 20 reps. Perhaps he has even more than that in store.

As for his affinity for the 3-4, he could be awfully difficult to pass on for a 3-4 team with a need for heat on the quarterback.
