The New York Giants took care of business in Sunday's 52-27 win over the New Orleans Saints, but lost in an outburst of points was a Big Blue defense that still isn't playing its best football.
Defensive tackle Chris Canty labeled it a "good" showing, but left it at that.
"It wasn't a signature defensive performance," Canty told The Star-Ledger. "There were a lot of miscues and things that we have to get cleaned up and corrected, namely the big plays both in the run game and the pass game. We've got to find a way to get those issues fixed."
The Giants' 25th-ranked defense is giving up too much yardage (376.2 yards per game), but the unit does a good job of generating turnovers and sits ninth in the NFL in scoring defense. Forget the numbers. What we're not seeing from the Giants is that dominating pass rush that threw quarterbacks off their axis last season.
There's plenty of talent in New York. The Giants are capable of beating anyone when they play their best football, but Canty is correct: This defense has yet to flip the switch.
