There is little doubt that Jared Goff is highly regarded among NFL scouts, but in a league of 32 teams, complete consensus on any prospect is unusual, even for the best of prospects.
Case in point, this Goff doubter:
"I hope somebody takes him early, ahead of us," the NFC scout told NJ Advance Media. "That would be great, drop a good player to us.
"I'm just not crazy about him, not at all. He doesn't win. Show me a quarterback who didn't win in college, that did well up here? There aren't many. To me he's another Jay Cutler. And you can take that any way you want."
Presumably, we're supposed to take that negatively.
The Chicago Bears quarterback has plenty of arm strength, but inconsistency and interceptions (141 over 10 seasons) leave him open to such comparisons. Of course, there is always the looming possibility that comments like these are made by someone who thinks very much the opposite, but wants a different perception finding its way around the rest of the league.
At the other extreme, one doesn't have to go far to find high praise for Cal's three-year starter. NFL Films senior producer Greg Cosell believes he's a better prospect than last year's No. 1 overall pick, Jameis Winston.
It's not the first time Goff, who went 14-23 as Cal's starter, has been compared to Cutler, either. Another NFL scout, in a somewhat more positive light, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in December that Goff has some Cutler-like traits, as well. That scout noted arm talent, vision and accuracy among the similarities between the two.
The lesson here: Perspectives vary can vary widely from one draft room to another. As can motivations.
