Are Broncos one running back away from an unstoppable offense?
The Denver Broncos' signing of Wes Welker represented a seismic moment in the AFC arms race.
Rahim Mooretragedies aside, the Broncos already might have been the conference's cream of the crop entering the 2013 season. John Elway's move to join Welker with Peyton Manning was a stroke of genius.
Manning now leads an offense with a trio of receivers in Welker, Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker who beat any combo in football. The decision to use the franchise tag on offensive tackle Ryan Clady keeps the line fortified, while the combination of Joel Dreessen and Jacob Tamme are more than serviceable at tight end.
The one question mark is the backfield. The Broncos have depth at running back in Knowshon Moreno and Ronnie Hillman, but they lack the thumper who can serve as the bell cow. It's hard to trust Willis McGahee, who's turning 32 and is coming off a broken leg.
The current trend in the NFL is waiting until deeper in the draft before finding a running back, which gives the Broncos an added advantage. They can use their first pick to shore up their secondary or defensive line, then grab that workhorse back with their second pick.
Alabama star Eddie Lacy makes almost too much sense. Given Elway's track record in recent years, we expect him to get this right.
