NFLPA move doesn't change 'bounty' player punishment appeals

Although the NFL Players Association has filed a grievance challenging NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's authority and jurisdiction with player suspensions in the Saints bounty case, it does not affect the players' appeal rights.

Jonathan Vilma, Scott Fujita, Anthony Hargrove and Will Smith have until the end of business Monday to notify the NFL of their intent to appeal their suspensions.

The NFLPA filed a grievance challenging Commissioner Roger Goodell's powers in the "bounty" case on Thursday, NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported Friday.

The union's system arbitration alleges that the authority for punishments for pay-for-performance programs similar to those in the "bounty" case does not rest with Goodell but with the system arbitrator, according to the current collective bargaining agreement.
