Detroit has been dominant on defense through the first six weeks of the season, and the Lions added eight more sacks to their list on Sunday in a 17-3 win over the Minnesota Vikings.
With Calvin Johnson banged up and Reggie Bush also missing time on the offensive side of the ball, they can thank defensive coordinator Teryl Austin's scheme for their current run atop the NFC North.
According to defensive tackle Nick Fairley, though, something more significant is in the works.
"We can be the best ever, in my eyes," he told reporters after the game.
At the moment, Detroit is No. 1 in both total defense and in scoring defense (13.7 points per game), though the Lions are a long way from the best ever. The 2000 Baltimore Ravens had four shutouts, and the 2013 Seattle Seahawks allowed fewer than 180 passing yards per game.
Detroit, though, might have one of the fiercest fronts we've seen in a long time. For now, it's put the Lions in control of a very good division.
