San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York said Friday on NFL Network that his team promoting Jim Tomsula to coach, Geep Chryst to offensive coordinator and Eric Mangini to defensive coordinator is a positive to keep continuity on a squad that is a year removed from three consecutive NFC Championship Games.
With Colin Kaepernick's struggles the past year, some believed the 27-year-old needed a fresh offensive coaching staff. With Chryst's promotion, York dismissed the idea that his starting quarterback needed to be fixed.
"It's not fixing Kaepernick," York said. "I think Kap is an unbelievable player. He's a young guy that continues to grow and mature, but we all do."
York compared Kaepernick's need to improve to how the veteran players strive to get better.
"You look at Anquan Boldin," he said. "Anquan Boldin is going to try to get better in the offseason, and he's already a Hall of Famer. Frank Gore is the same way."
York added that the current staff knows better than anyone how best to put the quarterback in a position to make plays.
"But with Kap you got a guy in Geep Chryst who knows him better than anybody else," he said. "You have a great guy in Steve Logan that's coming in that's going to work with him on fundamentals and to put a system that's going to put Kap in the best position to make plays.
"How many quarterbacks in this league can run 90 yards for a touchdown? I can't think of many, but you have to put Kap in position where he can make those plays and put Kap in position where we can run the ball. We can throw the ball in ways that allows him to be successful and let him be the absolute stud that he can be on the field, and that's what you're going to see from us next year. Defenses are not going to want to play against us because you're not going to know where we're going to hit you."
York believes keeping the same staff around Kaepernick will aid the quarterback, but if 2015 ends up like 2014 the CEO might regret not bringing in fresh faces.
