Niners' Kyle Shanahan not worried about Christian McCaffrey (calf)'s readiness: 'He's obsessed with it'

There are plenty of things San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan can fret over this offseason, from Brandon Aiyuk's hold-in to Trent Williams' holdout. One thing he isn't worrying about in mid-August is Christian McCaffrey's mild calf issue.

The coach noted Tuesday that CMC is so maniacal in his preparation that it allows him to hit the ground running -- literally and figuratively -- when he returns from an injury. Shanahan even made a quip about the newly married running back focusing on football while he was walking down the aisle.

"That's what's good when you're that obsessive about everything," Shanahan said on Tuesday, via the team's official transcript. "When you're hurt, you're hurt, you can't go. But when you take every rep, every walk-through, everything you do, you're just so deliberate and everything. When he is probably walking down the aisle to get married, he's probably thinking about his feet and how to do routes, no offense to [McCaffrey's wife] Olivia (Culpo). But he's obsessed with it. And so when you do get in these situations where you do get hurt and you can't go do all that stuff, at least he's put the work in before. So that stuff does come back fast."

McCaffrey, who played through bumps and bruises last season to earn Offensive Player of the Year honors, has dealt with a minor calf issue during training camp but has reportedly looked spry while doing side work. All indications are that he won't be hindered come Week 1.

"He understands what it takes to play in this game, especially at the level he does," Shanahan added. "And not many people play at that level unless they are like that."
