NaVorro Bowman will not see the field for the San Francisco 49ers this season.
The team announced it placed the linebacker, along with defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey, on season-ending injured reserve Saturday.
The Niners activated Bowman from the physically unable to perform list on Tuesday in hopes that he might be able to return as the season wound down. However, the three-time All-Pro did not practice all week, before being shut down for the duration of the year.
Bowman suffered a gruesome knee injury last postseason in the NFC Championship game against the Seattle Seahawks, tearing his ACL and MCL.
With the season spiraling away from the 7-6 Niners, it was likely a prudent move to shut down the 26-year-old stud rather than risk further damage to a knee that wasn't 100 percent.
Dorsey, meanwhile, was shut down due to a torn biceps he suffered this offseason. The team still gave the nose tackle a two-year contract extension in August and coach Jim Harbaugh was optimistic of an early return. However, after being activated in mid-November, Dorsey spent the last three game on the inactive list.
The team promoted corner Marcus Cromartie and guard Andrew Tiller to the active roster.
