Niners' Jordan Mason injures shoulder during Thursday night win vs. Seahawks

Jordan Mason's been a sensational replacement for the injured Christian McCaffrey.

Now, the San Francisco 49ers might need a replacement for Mason, who suffered a shoulder injury in the second quarter of Thursday night's 36-24 win over the Seahawks.

Following the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan had no update about the severity of Mason's injury, but expected to know more on Friday.

"Yeah, he thought he was gonna be alright," Shanahan said. "He went back in [the game] and it just hurt him too much, so he went out. I think that was the first play, and then he was out just in case of emergency."

Mason walked to the locker room for X-rays and was deemed questionable to return, which he did for one play in the third quarter. However, he went to the sideline immediately after an 8-yard run. He later made his way to the blue tent. Before and after his time in the tent, Mason could be seen working out his injured left shoulder.

The running back's ability to return to the game hasn't alleviated Shanahan's concern that it could be serious.

"I don't know, you never know," Shanahan said. "I mean, adrenaline on these days during games is a little bit different. We'll find out more tomorrow."

Mason rushed for 73 yards on nine carries, increasing his NFL-leading season rushing total to 609 yards.

In his absence, rookie Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor, along with wide receiver Deebo Samuel, filled in at running back with the operation chugging along. The 49ers produced 228 yards rushing, 155 coming from runners other than Mason.

Just how serious Mason's ailment is remains to be seen.
