The San Francisco 49ers made a nice gesture to their star linebacker in rehab.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the 49ers will pay Aldon Smith's salary while he's in rehab, per a team source. If Smith is fined by the NFL following his second DUI-related arrest, the 49ers don't want Smith absorbing double the financial hit.
Smith took an indefinite leave of absence from the 49ers after entering in-patient rehab this week and is expected to miss at least one month.
According to NFL Media's Albert Breer, the feeling is that Smith will eventually face a two- to four-game suspension once his DUI case has made it through the court system, which might not take place for a few months or even until the offseason.
