The top priority for the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason is identifying a franchise quarterback. Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch plans to start the evaluation process as soon as possible.
"As soon as the season ends," he said Thursday, per The Florida Times-Union. "Right away."
Chad Henne will finish the season as the starting quarterback, but the veteran has proven he's closer to being a solid backup than a winning starter. The Jaguars already have committed to moving on from Blaine Gabbert.
Fisch said he plans to evaluate 20 to 25 college quarterbacks.
"I'll start with just game tapes and then after game tapes, I'll look at (cut-up) tapes so it will be more along the lines of -- I'll look at their third downs, their red zone, their two-minute drives and then I'll look at all their sacks and the play that followed the sack to see how they handled it and then their broken plays. What happened when it wasn't easy?" Fisch said.
Fisch understands leadership is an important trait for a quarterback -- especially the face of the franchise -- but that aspect isn't easily drawn from film.
The quarterback analysis will be pivotal for Jacksonville. The franchise can't afford another swing and miss at the most important position on the football field.
