Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly exited the Rebels' 37-27 win over Georgia Southern Saturday with a knee injury, and will undergo an MRI to determine its extent.
Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said the MRI would take place on Sunday, according to the Daily Mississippian.
"I didn't see it, because it wasn't a run play or anything he just, after he stepped and threw it somebody rolled into him," Freeze said. "He said it's on the outside part of his knee, which is typically not the worst of cases, but we won't know until the MRI."
Losing Kelly for any length of time would make a bad season even worse for the Rebels, who have already lost five games and still have Texas A&M and rival Mississippi State left on the schedule as the team tries to qualify for bowl eligibility. The nephew of former Buffalo Bills star Jim Kelly, Chad completed 16 of 23 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown prior to the injury.
His replacement, Jason Pellerin, said Kelly was optimistic about his playing status.
"(Kelly) said he's fine," Pellerin said, according to the Oxford Eagle. "I don't know if he is or not, but he's the one who knows how he feels. Chad's one of the toughest guys I know."
Kelly, a senior, is one of the top quarterback prospects for next year's NFL draft. While he has plenty of size and arm strength, he can be erratic at times and is known to make risky throws. He's been compared to Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
