Osi Umenyiora could be retiring as a member of the Giants.
The 33-year-old pass rusher, who spent nine seasons with the club before a brief stint in Atlanta, is in discussions with the team on a one-day contract that would allow him to bow out in blue, sources familiar with the situation told Around The NFL.
ESPN first reported the development.
Umenyiora was a key cog in both of the Giants' Super Bowl runs over the past decade. He served as an irreplaceable speed threat in the team's NASCAR rush package, which twice stymied great Patriots offenses.
When he signs his deal, he'll go out as one of the most productive rushers of his generation. Currently, he sits 49th on the all-time sack list with 85.
In some ways, the reunion will be a short reminder of what could have been. Despite a few contract-related disputes over the years, Umenyiora was always interested in returning to East Rutherford. There was mutual interest before the start of the 2014 season.
Instead, he'll have to settle for a ceremony. It's one the team is getting quite used to these days as the brilliant core of their two Super Bowl teams continues to explore life after the game.
