Packers CB Woodson escapes Michigan house fire

BAY HARBOR, Mich. -- Green Bay Packers cornerback Charles Woodson said Wednesday that he was lucky to escape a burning house in Michigan last week, several hours after a celebration ended.

Woodson told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that he was at Gwen Haggerty's house in Bay Harbor on Friday night when the Ted and Jane Von Voigtlander Foundation was honored for donating $15 million to name the new women's hospital at the University of Michigan.

Woodson, a former Wolverine, said he and other overnight guests were fortunately still awake when the fire started sometime after 4 a.m. Saturday. As a result, everyone was able to get out of the house.

The AP was told that all 16 people got out, but that one of two cats didn't survive.
