With their differences in the rear-view mirror, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers argued in May that it's high time for Green Bay to retire Brett Favre's No. 4 jersey.
The team sounds prepared to do so. Someday.
On the heels of Mark Murphy's comments about wanting Favre "back in the family," the Packers President and CEO wrote Saturday on the team's official website that Favre "deserves to have his number retired for what he accomplished and meant to the Packers during his time here."
Said Murphy: "I thought Aaron Rodgers and Brett jointly presenting the Comeback Player of the Year Award at the NFL Honors program was a great first step. It is really just a question of timing in terms of retiring his jersey. The timing has to be right for both Brett and the organization. Brett will be a first ballot Hall of Famer in 2016, and we would like to retire his number prior to his induction."
Murphy made similar comments last year, but peaceful inroads with Favre seemed less likely back then. One year later, Rodgers is singing the Ol' Gunslinger's praises, and Packers brass is warming up to the idea to some version of an epic "Brett Day" in Green Bay. One more beloved afternoon together before Favre steers that tractor, once and for all, into the Mississippian abyss.
