A recent report out of Green Bay suggested that Packers president Mark Murphy started talking about a long-term contract with coach Mike McCarthy. Before that happens, it sounds like general manager Ted Thompson will be taken care of.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport asked Murphy on Tuesday at the Spring League Meeting what would go into an extension for McCarthy.
"The way we're structured, football reports through Ted," Murphy said. "And then everything reports up through me, so the first step would be to extend Ted, then he would in turn enter in an extension for Mike."
Murphy said that extending McCarthy's contract would ultimately "be the general manager's decision." Murphy would not confirm that talks are underway, but it's not hard to read between the lines here.
Thompson's deal should come first, and we'd expect McCarthy to get signed long term soon after that.
