Packers obsessed with 'Settlers of Catan' board game

One faction of the Packers has found an unusual way to stave off seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and pass the rare moments of football down time in the cold, dark and sleepy Green Bay winters.

More than a dozen players, including the entire offensive line, have become addicted to the board game, "The Settlers of Catan."

"We're always looking for something to do, it's cold. No one wants to go outside, better find something," backup quarterback Matt Flynn explained, via Kevin Clark of the Wall Street Journal. "And this is a great game."

Flynn describes the game as a "nonviolent version of 'Risk),' " a contest of world conquest in which Seinfeld's Kramer once took the Congo as a penalty for Newman's cheating.

The Packers take the game seriously enough that left tackle David Bakhtiari once put an asterisk on center Corey Linsley's victory as a form of protest because the former was outside grilling chicken for the group when the game ended.

Third-string quarterback Scott Tolzien is notorious for slamming the board in frustration when he loses, per Clark.

Fans of television's Parks and Recreation will recognize Catan as the inspiration for Ben Wyatt's fictional, overly complex and convoluted board-game brainchild, "The Cones of Dunshire."

As a board-game novice, I can only assume the key is rolling the dice to see how many dice to roll.
