Packers place rookie lineman Sherrod on IR, add vet Taylor

The Green Bay Packers have placed rookie offensive tackle Derek Sherrod on season-ending injured reserve and signed veteran lineman Herb Taylor to provide depth.

Sherrod, the Packers' first-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, broke his right leg during the Sunday's 19-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, leaving the team extremely thin at tackle to protect quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Sherrod had replaced starting right tackle Bryan Bulaga, who left the game with a sprained left knee. Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Bulaga would be "challenged" to play this week.

The Packers already had been playing without starting left tackle Chad Clifton, who has missed the last nine games with a hamstring injury.

Taylor, a third-year pro, played in 18 games with one start for the Chiefs from 2007 to 2008.

The Chiefs selected Taylor in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft after he started 48 games at TCU. Taylor was on Denver's active roster briefly at the end of the 2009 season and went to training camp with the Broncos in 2011 and the New York Giants in 2010.
