Rumors have floated throughout the offseason that Patriots left tackle Matt Light is headed toward retirement. Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com wrote Sunday that it is "expected" to happen, although nothing has been confirmed yet. Light, for one, isn't giving away his plans.
"I'm New England all the way," Light told Ron Borges of the Boston Herald at the NFL Players Association's annual meeting.
Light isn't acting like a man ready to walk away. He was one of four new members elected to the NFLPA's executive committee over the weekend, but that doesn't mean he has to play in 2012.
"Am I fully healthy? Look at me," Light said while pointing towards his healthy shoulder and leg, which had been hurt in the past. "Last season was great. I enjoyed it, which I kind of made obvious there at the end."
I saw Light immediately after the Super Bowl. He must have been the first player out of the team's locker room, fully dressed, seemingly buoyant (in contrast to Tom Brady), and ready to head off into the Indianapolis night. Yes, Light's shirt was on at the time.
Perhaps he knew his career was over and he was ready to celebrate, despite the result against the Giants. Then again, a lot of veteran retirement plans in February tend to change once August rolls around.
Don't close the book on Light just yet. He hasn't.
