Peyton Manning might not know exactly what his immediate future holds, but the retired Super Bowl champion has some idea of what it won't hold.
Manning was a guest speaker at the Middle Tennessee Sports Awards in Nashville Thursday, and put to rest any rumors that he's got designs on being the quarterbacks coach under Butch Jones at his alma mater, Tennessee.
"No, I will not be coaching quarterbacks at Tennessee, but I will be the biggest Vols fan this year," Manning said, according to Nashville radio host Austin Stanley.
Manning said last year that, between the quarterbacks coach job and the head coaching job at UT, he would prefer the former. Tennessee fans would no doubt welcome the program's iconic former player back in such a role, and there is little doubt that the nation's top quarterback recruits would be highly intrigued by the possibility of playing for him.
Just one little problem: there's no opening. Jones' quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator is Mike DeBord, a coaching veteran of 30 years with experience in the NFL as well as the college ranks.
The Denver Post compiled some other social media reports of Manning's remarks, including whether he would consider an NFL comeback.
"I am out of eligibility. I'm expired," he said, according to Jessica Bliss of The Tennessean. "... Maybe I will, I can't tell you that."
So don't be surprised if Manning makes his way to the sideline at Neyland Stadium at some point this fall, but as a guest -- not with a headset on.
