Peyton Manning surprises mourning family

Logan Brown didn't make it to his 16th birthday, but his family received a gift that the former football player would've cherished.

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning sent Logan's family a handwritten letter and an autographed picture. The star quarterback was one of Logan's favorite football players.

Gayle Ricketts, his grandmother, sent Manning a letter sharing Logan's story.

The teenager was killed in March by a drunk driver. Two other teens were seriously injured in the head-on collision. Logan was 15 years old.

"As a grandmother I felt like I should let Peyton know this young man idolized him and what he meant in his life," Ricketts told WFIE in Evansville, Indiana.

Manning's gesture was a pleasant surprise to the family that has dealt with a significant loss.

"It blew me away," said Ricketts. "I called Charles (Logan's dad) when the letter came. I didn't even open it. I called Charles to come over. I said the Broncos answered me."

Despite Manning changing teams in the twilight of his career, Logan stayed a loyal fan.

"When he was little we took him to a football game," said Ricketts. "That's when he first really liked Peyton and then when Peyton moved to the Broncos, he kind of deserted the Colts."

Logan's dad Charles described Manning's act as more than just a gift.

"And I know Logan is up there looking down. He's smiling. I think he will be happy," said Ricketts.
