Everyone knows (for now, anyway) that Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow go 1-2 on the New York Jets' quarterback depth chart.
Who will be team's No. 3 signal-caller is less clear. Greg McElroy was supposed to hold that title in 2011, but he missed the entire season with a thumb injury, then drew the ire of management when he spoke out about the "corrupt mindset" in the Jets' locker room.
The Jets signed undrafted free agent Matt Simms on Sunday, adding the son of former Giants great Phil Simms to a roster that now includes five quarterbacks. (New York signed former Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne last week.)
It's likely each of the three lesser-known QBs will have a legitimate shot at the job. McElroy made enemies with his honest take on the Jets' in-house culture. At the very least, that should crack the door open for Simms, Kinne or whoever else may enter the fray.
Simms earned his shot after impressing coaches during a three-day tryout at Jets' minicamp. His brother, Chris, is a New England Patriots coach who was once a starting QB for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"They have a tremendous knowledge of the game," he said of his brother and father, according to the New York Daily News. "Their help has guided me a lot through this process even though it has been difficult at times."
Simms played collegiately at Louisville, El Camino College and Tennessee. He was famously at the center of a heated dispute between Phil Simms and Desmond Howard at last year's Super Bowl.
