Connor Barwin's stint with the Philadelphia Eagles is over.
The team released the veteran defensive end on Thursday morning, hours before the start of NFL free agency.
The move saves Philly $7.75 million in salary-cap space, per OverTheCap.com.
Set to count $8.35 million against the cap, cutting Barwin was an expected move. After attempts to trade the pass rusher failed, the Eagles let him loose before free agency began.
Barwin didn't fit the profile of a defensive end in coordinator Jim Schwartz's system. In four seasons with the Eagles, he compiled 31.5 sacks, but had just five QB takedowns with 34 tackles in 2016 and his playing time diminished.
Barwin said in January he'd "take a pay cut" to stay in Philly, but the fit in the Eagles' system made little sense. The 30-year-old should find a home in a market in need of edge rushers. He's likely to land on a 3-4 team back at outside linebacker, where his versatility as a rusher and covering in space is better utilized.
