Proehl, who spent 17 seasons in the NFL as a wide receiver, including three with the Panthers, signed on as an offensive consultant, the team announced Tuesday. He primarily will work with new wide receivers coach Fred Graves, who joined the Panthers on Monday.

Proehl helped the Panthers reach the Super Bowl in his first season with the team, in 2003.

Proehl, a third-round draft pick out of Wake Forest by the Arizona Cardinals in 1990, also played with the Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams and Indianapolis Colts. He finished his NFL career with 669 receptions for 8,878 yards and 54 touchdowns.

Proehl caught 86 passes for 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns in three seasons with the Panthers, playing on two playoff teams. He was a member of four Super Bowl teams, including championship teams in St. Louis and Indianapolis.
