Who has the strongest throwing arm among NFL draft quarterback prospects David Fales of San Jose State, Tajh Boyd of Clemson and Logan Thomas of Virginia Tech? In perhaps a disputable outcome, Boyd threw the farthest of the three with a 64-yard throw in the Quicken Loans All-Star Football Challenge Tuesday, which aired on ESPN2. Still, Fales won the quarterback competition, which was primarily based on accuracy.
After throwing to moving targets for accuracy points, however, each quarterback threw one for distance. Boyd's 64-yarder bested both Thomas (57 yards) and Fales (56). However, Thomas' throw may have been the most impressive given the circumstances. Rules allowed for the quarterbacks to take a couple of steps into their distance throws to generate more power from the lower half. Thomas, however, was limping through the competition after being sacked five times in Saturday's Senior Bowl, and made his 57-yard throw from a stand-still position.
Fales (232 points) topped Boyd (208) and Thomas (194) to win one of six competitions that drew an impressive array of NFL prospects which also included two potential first-round picks from Alabama -- linebacker C.J. Mosley and safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix -- as well as highly-regarded linemen Jake Matthews of Texas A&M, Louis Nix III of Notre Dame, and Ra'Shede Hageman of Minnesota.
SJSU published complete results of the competition. Perhaps not by coincidence, the accuracy competition results aligned with NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah's rankings of the three quarterbacks from their Senior Bowl performances.
