Quintin Mikell might return to St. Louis Rams

Free-agent safety Quintin Mikell was released by the St. Louis Rams this month because of his wild $9 million scheduled salary-cap hit, but the team would like to bring him back into the fold.

"We have interest," Rams coach Jeff Fishertold Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this week. "He played very well for us last year. It's just one of those things that you have to do once you get in the process (of free agency) and you start making moves. But we have interest. The defensive staff was really happy with him last year."

The Rams are low on cap space, and teams generally don't want to pay premier money to safeties. Fisher said the team was negotiating with Mikell before his release but simply ran out of time.

Mikell improved in coverage last season and recorded 101 tackles, three sacks and four forced fumbles. With just Darian Stewart, Rodney McLeod and Matthew Daniels on the roster at safety, the Rams might be forced to look toward the draft if a deal with Mikell can't be worked out.
