A big piece of the New York Jets' revamped front seven is going off the radar for the time being.
The Jetsannounced Sunday that Quinton Coples will have a procedure on his ankle Tuesday and be sidelined for the balance of the preseason. The outside linebacker is out indefinitely.
The 2012 first-round daft pick injured his right ankle during Saturday night's 37-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The injury occurred when Coples rushed Chad Henne and fell awkwardly after knocking down a pass.
The New York Daily News previously reported that Coples suffered a hairline fracture in his ankle and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. If that timetable holds, the Jets could get Coples back in time for their Week 2 matchup against the New England Patriots. It's notable, however, that the Jets have put the indefinite timetable on Coples.
Antwan Barnes is expected to replace Coples in the starting lineup. It's a substantial downgrade for a team that is counting on Coples to develop into an impact pass rusher in his second season.
