Quinton Coples wants to live up to Rex Ryan's expectations

Quinton Coples doesn't think his predicament with New York Jets coach Rex Ryan is as bad as it looks.

Ryan said Monday that Coples, the Jets' first-round draft pick, gave him a "woe is me" type of look when Ryan pulled the defensive starters from Sunday night's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, but left Coples in.

"I don't think it bothered me at all," Coples said Tuesday, according to The Star-Ledger. "I think he's got high expectations for me, and at the end of the day, I've got to meet his expectations.

"It was one of those situations where it may look bad," Coples said, "but at the end of the day, it wasn't. But I understand where he's coming from. I understand the expectations, and I've just got to do better."

Coples admitted to feeling winded during a couple plays, but Ryan said he "absolutely" is not concerned about the defender's performance.

"I just gave a very honest deal on him," Ryan said, "I just saw him give that puppy dog look. The puppy dog barks a lot (too). He has some bite to him. He has had three sacks."

The Jets claimed punter Spencer Lanning off waivers from the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday, according to The Star-Ledger. Safety Yeremiah Bell has a bone bruise in his knee and linebacker Davis Harris has a regular ankle sprain, as opposed to a high ankle sprain.
