The Raiders hired Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp as their new offensive coordinator last week, and Saunders will remain on the team's staff after seeing Dennis Allen replace Hue Jackson as head coach.
The team later confirmed in a press release that Saunders, who has 29 years of NFL coaching experience, would return for the 2012 season.
Saunders will serve as a senior offensive assistant and is under contract through 2013.
