Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie is angling to steal a player away from his old employer, the Green Bay Packers.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Packers restricted free-agent safety Sean Richardson has signed an offer sheet with the Silver and Black, per a source informed of the move. Rapoport was told that Richardson inked a one-year deal worth $2.55 million.
Green Bay can match the offer, but the Packers will receive no compensation if they let Richardson walk after slapping the cover man with the lowest possible tender.
Richardson played in 16 games for the Packers last season but saw just 135 snaps after recovering from spinal-fusion surgery in 2013. The backstop has just 36 total tackles in three seasons with Green Bay after going undrafted out of Vanderbilt in 2012.
In Oakland, the signing adds depth to a Raiders roster currently primed to line up the underwhelming Nate Allen across from the aging Charles Woodson. Jonathan Dowling, Brandian Ross, Ras-I Dowling and Larry Asante fill out the safety room.
After over-drafting D.J. Hayden two seasons ago, the Raiders also need help at the corner spot. With Oakland set to pick at No. 4 and No. 35 overall, NFL Media's Gil Brandt believes the team has eyes for Washington's Marcus Peters, Michigan State's Trae Waynes and Wake Forest's Kevin Johnson.
