If there is room for one more on Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston's list of mentors, Randy Moss will take the seat.
The former NFL star, who spent a troubled year of his own at Florida State before salvaging his college career at Marshall, told Fox Sports he would be more than happy to talk to the Seminoles' Heisman Trophy winner about making better off-field choices. But whether it's he or someone else, Moss believes Winston needs to surround himself with more people willing to tell him no when he needs to hear it.
"He's still a young man. You have the people from the National Football League, and he's still on the baseball field, too. So there are a lot of professional people who are really looking at him, and seeing if he can come and lead a professional team," Moss said on Fox Sports. "(It's) the 'no' people. He needs the 'no' people in his camp. Sometimes people get in your life for the wrong reasons. I'll say to Jameis ... If you need someone, reach out to me. We've both been in a similar situation where we've had people coming down on us. Feel free to get up with me."
Amid a series of immature acts from stealing crab legs from a grocery store to shouting obscenities in the FSU student union, Winston still faces potential repercussions from a sexual assault allegation that is now nearly two years old. The state attorney chose not to charge Winston in the incident, but a school code of conduct hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 2 that could result in as many as four violations.
The third-year sophomore would be eligible for the 2015 NFL Draft if he chose to declare after the season, but still has two more seasons of NCAA eligibility remaining after this one.
"I like Jameis Winston, I went to Florida State, so I know some of the things he's going through as far as the hype and magnitude of where he's at," Moss added. "Those no people, what I mean is, those people to be able to tell him no."
Moss isn't the first noteworthy athlete to offer Winston some help where image repair is concerned. His predecessor in winning the Heisman, Johnny Manziel, did so last month.
