The Baltimore Ravens continued the retooling process of their offense on Friday, reaching a one-year deal with former Houston Texans tight end Owen Daniels.
The Ravens suddenly are worlds ahead of where they were at tight end last fall, when Dennis Pitta was recovering from hip surgery and Ed Dickson was unable to secure most oblong spheres tossed in his general vicinity.
Pitta's now healthy and well-funded, while Daniels slides in for Dickson, who lingers on the market as a free agent. Ravens coach John Harbaugh sees Daniels as a difference-maker.
"Just couldn't be more happy, more excited," Harbaugh said Friday, according to the Carroll County Times. "I guarantee his role will be plenty big. He's going to have a lot to do with our success next year, and we've got a lot of big plans for him."
Harbaugh's words tell us we'll see plenty of two-tight end sets in Baltimore's future. Offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak used that formation plenty when he was coaching Daniels during the veteran's productive run with the Texans.
"We've got the guys here to do it, and that makes things tough for defenses," Daniels said.
Assuming he's fully recovered from the broken leg that compromised his 2013 season, Daniels has all the looks of a warm security blanket for quarterback Joe Flacco -- and a free-agency steal for the Ravens.
