Word came down this week that President Barack Obama, aka the nation's first Bears fan, will host the 1985 Chicago Bears at the White House to make up for their missed opportunity 25 years ago. Better late than never.
But that got us to thinking about the gold mine that group would have been if IDP fantasy leagues were in vogue back then. Who wouldn't want Richard Dent and his 17 sacks? What about Otis Wilson's all-around play, with 10.5 sacks and three interceptions? Need a defensive back? Take your pick. The Bears certainly did -- the quartet of Leslie Frazier, Dave Duerson, Gary Fencik and Mike Richardson combined for 20 interceptions and two touchdowns.
Anyway, enough of that stroll down memory lane. Time to live in the now.
Four Downs
First down: It's been a good start to the season for the Redskins defense and if the wraps come off LaRon Landry this week, it could get that much better. The hard-hitting safety is raring to go and would likely enjoy nothing more than to announce his presence with authority against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night. With the Pokes featuring a banged-up Tony Romo and a slew of injured receivers, Landry could be in line for some big plays.
IDP rankings
Second down:Elvis Dumervil was back to work this week after missing Week 2 and should add something to a Denver pass rush that's been rather lackluster so far when the Broncos take on Tennessee. Matt Hasselbeck has thrown the ball 76 times in two games and if that trend continues, Dumervil will have plenty of chances to get to the quarterback.
Third down: It seems like not a week goes by without us writing about a Carolina Panthers linebacker. Now, it's Thomas Davis joining Jon Beasonon injured reserve with an ACL tear. That leaves James Anderson as Carolina's most experienced linebacker, but his injury history has been spotty as well. If you took a chance on Beason early, you'll have to look outside of Charlotte for IDP help.
Fourth down: Fresh off a two-game suspension, Kevin Williams will be back in purple for the Vikings. There aren't many defensive tackles who warrant a look in IDP leagues -- and Williams isn't one of them. But having Williams on the inside should make life a little easier for Jared Allen on the outside. Don't expect an immediate impact as Williams is still working his way back from a foot injury, but it's worth keeping an eye on.
