The Washington Redskins have lost Junior Galette before he played a meaningful snap for the team.
Coach Jay Gruden confirmed the Redskins linebacker suffered a torn Achilles tendon in practice on Wednesday and will miss the year. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport first reported the fear of the severity of the injury.
The Redskins signed Galette, who will have surgery on Friday, to a one-year contract in July after he had an ugly falling out with the New Orleans Saints that prompted his release. Galette was the Saints' top pass rusher, tallying 22 sacks in the past two seasons. He is generally regarded as one of the top 4-3 outside linebackers in the game.
The Saints thought so highly of Galette as a player that they rewarded him with a four-year extension worth $41.3 million last September that included nearly $18 million in payment in a period of 10 months. But off-the-field issues and locker room clashes prompted the Saints to radically reconsider their longterm plans.
The Redskinsscooped up Galette at a discount, hoping to add a jolt to their sagging defense. Misguided or not, that plan has now gone out the window.
