San Francisco 49ers running back Reggie Bush wants in on punt returns.
Though he hasn't been a returner in three years, Bush told reporters in the Bay Area on Thursday that he approached the coaching staff about an increased special teams role.
"It was my idea," Bush said via CSN Bay Area. "I told the coaches I wanted to return punts again. And they were excited about it. We're still working at it, still chipping away. And we look forward to being an all-around great special teams."
Bush would have to unseat the incumbent Bruce Ellington, though given his pedigree it might not be so difficult.
In 2008, he scored on three of the 20 punts he returned in New Orleans. He has a career average of 7.9 yards per return, which is nowhere near Devin Hester territory, but is still pretty solid (interesting to note: Bush more than doubled Hester's average yards per return total in 2008).
If nothing else, it will be interesting to see if San Francisco still views Bush as the game-breaking 20-something who set the college football world on fire. At this point, what do they have to lose?
Turning Bush loose again would give us all another chance to dig up our favorite poorly-constructed YouTube highlight video from 2006, which we watched and immediately tried to imitate in the quad before tearing several ligaments.
