The Washington Redskins and beloved former quarterback Doug Williams might be reuniting.
The two sides are in talks for Williams to return to the franchise in a front-office role, The Washington Post reported Monday, per a source familiar with the situation.
Williams led the 'Skins to a romp over the Broncos in Super Bowl XXII and was the game's MVP. He remains the only African-American quarterback to lead his team to a Lombardi Trophy. Since Williams started working with the Buccaneers' front office in 2004, Redskins fans have clamored for his return to the club in some capacity. Now it seems on the cusp of reality.
"I think there's some talk going on," the source told The Post. "I think Doug is receptive to it. Bruce is receptive to it and they're working out some details. I think there's something positive happening there."
Williams worked as a personnel executive with the Bucs under current Redskins general manager Bruce Allen from 2004 to 2008. Allen was fired from his GM post with Tampa Bay after the '08 season, but Williams stayed on for two more years, transitioning to coordinator of pro scouting.
If nothing else, Williams' addition to the staff would be a nice sentiment for the fan base, and a link to the team's halcyon days.
