Sound the horn! Brett Favre is open to another NFL return.
At least according to a Monday report by ESPN, which cited a source familiar with the ol' gunslinger in saying he would listen to the Chicago Bears if they came calling.
While some don't want to extinguish the eternal flame attached to Favre's NFL career, all indications point to No. 4 staying in Hattiesburg for the balance of the 2011 season and beyond.
For starters, the Bears remain committed to Caleb Hanie, despite him throwing six interceptions in the previous two weeks. Devin Hestersaid Monday that bringing in a veteran QB at this point is a "waste of time." Coach Lovie Smith also made it clear he's willing to stick with in-house options that include Hanie, Josh McCown and Nathan Enderle.
"That's our group," Smith said of the three quarterbacks. "We're going to make improvements with our group. We're not looking on the outside. We won't have a quarterback tryout or anything like that."
Then there's the monumental task of Favre coming in and being able to absorb even the basics of Mike Martz's complicated offense on the fly. Speaking of which, it might take about four practices before Favre's relationship with Martz went nuclear.
