NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday the Buffalo Bills have given wide receiver Mike Williamspermission to seek a trade.
After losing Eli Manning's go-to receiver, Victor Cruz, to a season-ending torn patellar tendon, the New York Giants are one potential suitor.
The Giants have "some" interest in Williams and will likely at least "explore" trade talks, Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reported Tuesday morning.
There are two major stumbling blocks to a trade.
The six-year, $40.5 million contract inherited by the Bills includes a $5.2 million 2015 salary guaranteed for injury only, as well as a $1 million roster bonus due on the third day of the league year.
Any team acquiring Williams would simply be renting him for the second half of this season.
"If he gets me compensation worthy of a No. 1 receiver, which he claimed he is," Whaley said, "then we would entertain it."
It's going to be a challenge for Whaley to find a buyer for a disgruntled wide receiver with eight catches, 142 yards and well-establishedcharacter concerns.
UPDATE: A person familiar with the situation told NJ.com on Tuesday that the Giants are not interested in giving up a draft pick and paying Williams' high salary.
