Report: Kitna tells Cowboys he will walk away from the game

Jon Kitna reportedly is making good on his intention to retire from the NFL and has informed the Dallas Cowboys that his playing days are over, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Kitna did not return phone calls or emails from the Star-Telegram requesting comment.

Kitna, 39, played for the Seahawks, Bengals and Lions before joining Dallas in 2009. He missed the last several games of this season with a back injury.

Kitna passed for 29,745 yards in his 15-year NFL career, with a 60.3 completion percentage and 169 touchdowns to 165 interceptions.

An official announcement through the Cowboys is expected later this week. Kitna's retirement leaves the Cowboys without an experienced backup to starter Tony Romo.
